A steep former copper boomtown turned artsy mountain escape, filled with mining history, old buildings, shops, views, and ghost stories.
About
Jerome clings to Cleopatra Hill above the Verde Valley, where a booming copper town nearly emptied after the mines closed and then reinvented itself as an arts and visitor destination. Walk the switchback streets for historic buildings, galleries, shops, wine tasting rooms, restaurants, and wide valley views. Jerome State Historic Park gives the mining backstory, while local history and ghost tours lean into the town’s famously haunted reputation.
Why stop: Jerome packs mining history, eccentric art, mountain views, and spooky storytelling into a walkable little town that feels unlike anywhere else in Arizona.
Good to know: Parking is limited and streets are steep, narrow, and busy on weekends. Arrive early, wear shoes with good grip, use public parking, and expect stairs and sloped sidewalks. Check tour and museum schedules separately before making the drive.
Hours: The town is open daily; individual museums, tours, shops, and restaurants set their own hours. The visitor center is generally self-service 11:00 AM–5:00 PM as volunteers are available.
